Orton C of E School in Cumbria awarded for its work teaching children about healthy and climate-friendly food.
Dr Hilary Jones, spokesperson for the School & Nursery Milk Alliance, has named Orton C of E School in Cumbria the winner of the Alliance’s School of the Month for June.
This award recognises the school’s efforts to promote healthy lifestyles for their pupils and the planet, in keeping with the Alliance’s aims to promote environmental awareness and a nutritious lifestyle for children.
Congratulating Orton C of E School on its award, Dr Hilary commended the school on the fantastic efforts to teach children about the importance of sustainable and healthy food, which included activities with their sponsors,
The Westmorland Family business, where the children cooked for themselves and participated in growing food too.
The children also visited a local dairy farm close to Orton and then followed the milk to a big processing centre for
Nestlé near Carlisle.
“We achieved the Bronze level of Food for Life because of the efforts we’ve made in recent years,” said headteacher,
Mrs Emma Pomfret, “and this is additional recognition of that work, especially the emphasis on dairy farming and milk production. Living where we do in the Eden district of Cumbria, dairy farming is a day-to-day experience for several of our children so it made sense to follow the journey of milk from cow to carton with our visits as part of the curriculum.”
